High resolution scanning and digital archiving of a rare Civil War Union Army Discharge Certificate

 

A CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S STORY WAS ALMOST LOST FOREVER.

A rare Civil War Union Army Discharge Certificatehad become severely faded, with iron gall ink, stains, and creases obscuring much of its original text, including a handwritten list of battles recorded by the veteran. After careful conservation, deacidification, high-resolution digitization, and meticulous digital restoration, a museum-quality archival facsimile was produced, preserving both the document's appearance and the soldier's remarkable military history for future generations.

Family heirlooms are more than historical artifacts, they are tangible connections to the lives, sacrifices, and stories of those who came before us. One such treasure entrusted to our studio was a rare Civil War Union Army Discharge Certificate that had suffered extensive deterioration over more than a century and a half.

The document had faded significantly, with much of the original text, written in iron gall ink, becoming nearly illegible due to age, staining, creases, and the natural chemical deterioration associated with this historic ink. Its greatest historical significance, however, lay on the reverse side, where the soldier had carefully recorded the battles and skirmishes in which he had served. In the absence of military medals or formal citations, such handwritten records often served as deeply personal testimonials to a veteran's service and sacrifice, preserving a military history that might otherwise have been lost to time.

The conservation process began with the careful surface cleaning of the document to remove accumulated dirt and debris, followed by a professional deacidification treatment to help neutralize harmful acids and slow future deterioration. Once stabilized, the certificate was digitized at extremely high resolution, allowing every surviving detail to be captured.

Using the digital master file, painstaking restoration was performed to recover the faded handwriting and improve the readability of the original text while faithfully preserving the document's historic character. Particular attention was given to the handwritten battle list, ensuring that this invaluable record of the soldier's wartime service remained legible for future generations.

As a final step, a museum-quality facsimile was produced on archival natural-fiber paper carefully selected to closely resemble the paper available during the Civil War era. Original folds, creases, and small tears were meticulously recreated so that the reproduction faithfully reflected the appearance and character of the original document while allowing the fragile original to be safely preserved.
